A city’s skyline is more than just a collection of buildings; it also symbolises its identity. From towering skyscrapers to historic landmarks, the world’s most iconic skylines are instantly recognisable and are among the first things that come to mind when you think of a city.
Slingo slots have taken a look at which cities have the most iconic skylines based on social media posts, the number of skyscrapers, and how closely they match the ‘golden ratio’. This mathematical ratio, approximately 1.618, is celebrated as the secret to aesthetic harmony, found in art, design and even nature. Cities with skylines closer to this number aren’t just visually striking—they’re scientifically beautiful.

Classic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building have long been staples, while newer buildings, such as the One World Trade Center, have also been introduced.
The most mathematically beautiful skyline
New Orleans, United States - 0.5 deviation from the golden ratio
We calculated the aspect ratio (width divided by height) of each skyline’s image to measure of its proportions. We then compared this to the golden ratio (1.618), a standard for aesthetic balance. Smaller deviations reflect closer alignment with the golden ratio, meaning, the closer the match, the more beautiful the skyline.
When it comes to these picture-perfect proportions, New Orleans is on top. Whether you’re enjoying the view from the Mississippi River or capturing the skyline against a glowing sunset, New Orleans proves that it’s got style, history, and now, the most mathematically gorgeous skyline in the world.
The city with the most skyscrapers
Hong Kong - 558 buildings over 150 metres
Hong Kong’s skyline is all about going big! With 558 buildings taller than 150 metres (and 97 taller than 200 metres) in a relatively small area, it’s one of the most densely packed skylines on the planet.
The International Commerce Centre and Bank of China Tower are standout features, while Victoria Harbour and the surrounding mountains give the skyline a dramatic natural backdrop. It also features a nightly "Symphony of Lights" light and sound show, the largest of its kind in the world.
Methodology
We put together a list of iconic skylines from around the world, including capital cities, business hubs and popular tourist destinations.
For each city, we collected the number of Instagram hashtags for "#[city]skyline".
We then took the number of 150m+, 200m+, and 300m+ buildings in each skyline from the Skyscraper Center.
To calculate the most aesthetically pleasing skylines, each skyline’s image was processed to determine its aspect ratio (width divided by height). This ratio gives a numerical representation of the skyline’s proportions.
The golden ratio (1.618) was used as a benchmark for aesthetic balance. For each city, the deviation from the golden ratio was calculated using: (Aspect Ratio − Golden Ratio) ÷ Golden Ratio. Smaller deviations indicate a closer alignment with the golden ratio.
All data is accurate as of 13/12/2024.
